NEIU 19 proudly presents our newest transition program for students with intellectual disabilities and autism. Our STRIVE Program is Student Training to Reach Independence and Vocational Experience. The research and evidence-based curriculum from Education Associates Job Ready Life Ready will be utilized. Students will engage in learning activities from the Job Ready strand called Project Discovery and the Life Ready strand called Achieve Life Skills. They will learn in areas such as social skills, telephone skills, and friendship basics, along with having the opportunity to learn jobs in areas of filing, mail handling, food and table service, grocery clerking, and many more. In collaboration with Agency for Community Empowerment (HeadStart), Ms. Fern Chromey came to Line St. EI to explore the world of music therapy and meditation with Miss Maura and Miss Renee’s students! Fern brought musical instruments, meditation bowls, and exotic instruments for the children to touch and play. The sessions were hosted in the new outdoor sensory area and kids were able to play the instruments and learn about meditation beats and sounds. Even the adults learned the benefit of music meditation and the calming effects of sounds/tones. We look forward to continuing our connection with Fern and ACE to bring more of these opportunities to our students. Thank you Ms. Fern!
